Machame Camp

Located along the Machame Route for climbing Africa’s tallest mountain, Machame Camp (2835m) is a busy campsite with plenty of space to pitch a tent and there are still a few trees around at this altitude. The views are wonderful, especially where Mt Kilimanjaro rises to the north, and there are plenty of other travelers for you to meet.

Shira Camp 1

We think you’ll enjoy Shira Camp 1, which inhabits a plateau at 3810m and sees fewer travelers than many other Kilimanjaro campsites. There are no facilities here, but you should be able to see Kilimanjaro’s Kibo summit north-east from your tent, and Mount Meru to the west. Although there are no trees, the scrubby vegetation adds a tinge of green.

Barranco Camp

You can see the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro from Barranco Camp (3983m). It’s a stirring backdrop to the campsite, and its high snows are a contrast to the bare, dry landscape that surrounds you here, high above the tree line. Barranco lies along a number of climbing routes, including the popular Machame Route, so there are always lots of people in camp.

When you stay at Barafu Camp, at an altitude of 4681m on Mt Kilimanjaro, you’re surrounded by a landscape where nothing grows and the views extend out across the mountain’s high and treeless valleys. ‘Barafu’ means ‘ice’ in Swahili and it’s always cold up here, as well as beautiful. Enjoy talking with the other climbers who’ve reached this milestone.

Mweka Camp

You know you’re on the way down when you stay at Mweka Camp, a descent-only camp along four different routes down from the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro. Here at an altitude of 3060m, you can start to breathe a little easier, and there’s always a good feeling with other climbers happy and excited to be on the way down. The views here are spectacular.

1. What is the Machame Route?

The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It approaches the mountain from the southwest and offers stunning views, varied landscapes, and a challenging but rewarding climb.

2. How long is the Machame Route climb?

The Machame Route typically takes 6 days, including summit day. This itinerary is designed to balance trekking distance and altitude gain, though a 7-day option is also available for better acclimatization.

3. Is the Machame 6 Days climb difficult?

The climb is considered moderately difficult to challenging. It involves steep ascents, high altitude, and long trekking days. Prior hiking experience and good physical fitness are strongly recommended.

4. What is the success rate for the 6-day Machame Route?

The summit success rate for the 6-day Machame Route is approximately 60–70%. Adding an extra acclimatization day (7 days) significantly increases the success rate.

5. What is the best time to climb the Machame Route?

The best months are:
January to March (warm with occasional rain)
June to October (dry and most popular)
April–May and November are rainy seasons and less recommended.

6. What accommodation is used on the Machame Route?

Accommodation on the Machame Route is camping only. Climbers stay in high-quality mountain tents, and all camping equipment is provided by the trekking operator.

7. What is the maximum altitude reached?

The summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak, stands at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level.

8. How do I prepare physically for the climb?

Preparation should include:
Cardiovascular training (hiking, jogging, cycling)
Strength training for legs and core
Practice hikes with a loaded backpack
Mental preparation for long trekking days

9. What about altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness is a common risk. Guides monitor climbers daily, and acclimatization strategies such as “climb high, sleep low” are used. Proper hydration and a slow pace are essential.

A non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your booking. The remaining balance must be paid before or upon arrival as specified.

2. Cancellations & Refund Policy

Cancellations made 30 days or more before departure may receive a partial refund excluding the deposit. No refunds apply for cancellations within 30 days.

3. Itinerary Changes

We reserve the right to modify the itinerary due to weather, safety, health conditions, or park regulations.

4. Fitness & Medical Requirements

Clients must be in good physical and mental health and should consult a medical professional before booking.

5. Altitude & Early Descent

Guides have full authority to require descent for safety reasons. No refunds apply in such cases.

6. Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking (up to 6,000m) is mandatory.

7. Park Rules

All climbers must comply with Kilimanjaro National Park regulations at all times.

8. Liability

Participation is at the client’s own risk. The company is not responsible for losses beyond its control.
